About Being a Host
Reaching out to public audiences is key to our mission, and we are always interested in fostering ocean leadership at the local scale. If you are passionate about the ocean, marine science, and marine conservation, Beneath the Waves can serve as platform for you to initiate discussions in your own community, whether you are an ocean guru, a scientist, or have never been in the ocean (though we highly recommend it).
Every year we partner with several local hosts who organize and create their own unique Beneath the Waves Film Festival. These screenings can last a few hours, become a series of multi-day events, or become incorporated into an existing group’s program.

In the past, we have created over 40 Beneath the Waves screenings at unique locations worldwide. Screenings have taken place in almost all types of venues and locations: the common room of a hostel in Reykjavik, Iceland, outside on the beach in Belize, in local schools and communities in Peru, and at Universities and theaters throughout Europe, Australia, and the United States. The world is your oyster (no pun intended).
If you are interested in becoming a local host, please see the criteria below and send us an email (festivals@beneaththewaves.org) with your application. If your application is accepted, we will provide access to an extensive library of current and past Beneath the Waves films, as well as Beneath the Waves literature, logos, and surveys for your event. We look forward to hearing from you!
Expectations
- A team of committed personnel to serve as regional Beneath the Waves representatives, led by a principal organizer (generally 2-4 people).
- A host location/venue that has agreed to screen the films for free to the public. Venues can vary in size (local theatres, coffee shops, music festivals, galleries, universities, hostels, etc.).
- Hosts must create their own “setlist” of Beneath the Waves films based on your anticipated audience and relevant marine issues in your region.
- Hosts must handle the screening of films themselves (i.e., the audio-video system).
- Hosts must have access to a printer for printing their own promotional documents, as well as our survey materials.
- We insist that hosts invite and collaborate with local scientists, non-profit organizations, or conservationists during the event (e.g., panel members for questions and answer session with public audiences pertaining to local marine and/or marine science topics.
- Hosts must document the audience size and demographic distribution of the event. Additionally we require that hosts capture and document the event through photo and/or video.
- Hosts must distribute Beneath the Waves surveys to all audience members and send this information back to main Beneath the Waves team.
- We respectfully ask each potential host to provide a hosting fee to Beneath the Waves, Inc., which helps support the organization’s curating and development costs. Please inquire for more details.
- Please see our host checklist to get a sense of the timeline for organizing your event.
