Festivals

Beneath the Waves Film Festivals occur worldwide throughout the year. We feel like there is truly no experience like bringing people together, dimming the lights, and presenting the issues and stories first-hand. After the films, we engage the audience with local scientists, to allow them to learn about the important work that is being done right in their own community. This format stimulates ideas, gets people talking, and leaves a special lasting impression that you simply can’t achieve in other ways. This is our format and template for each screening, whether it’s on an IMAX screen for 500 people or in a coffee shop for 10.

Kicking off one of our flagship events

Every year we generally host 3-4 large screenings (100-600 people), and around 15 smaller (20-100 people) screenings. 2014-2015 marks the 6th consecutive year of our event, and over the last five years we have reached over ten thousand people in-person from all over the world with our films. This combination of screenings gives us multiple opportunities to show off each year’s batch of films, as well as those in our archives from previous years (you can see them too - on the sidebar on the right).

Our screenings take place in a variety of public locations around the world, ranging from marine laboratories and universities to IMAX screens, local theatres, art galleries, and even traveler’s hostels. Each and every official screening is organized and curated by our team and various regional associates. One of our largest events each year happens in March in the southeastern United States, coinciding with the Benthic Ecology Meeting, which is one of the largest gatherings of marine scientists in the country.

One of our smaller screenings in the United Kingdom in 2013

The 2015 flagship event is scheduled for March 4-8th, 2015 in Quebec City, Canada with the Université Laval. We anticipate between 15-30 additional screenings worldwide; some dates have already been confirmed. More info on our 2015 events here.
